So, this thing that happened was an unjustifiable, heinous crime.
But this wasn't an attack against humor, or against democratic values.
This was an attack against a newspaper which, for years now, under the excuse of being "satirical" and "left-wing", has been spilling increasingly inflammatory and racist anti-muslim propaganda, the kind of which even the french far-right would not get away with. This was an attack against a group of people who, since 911, have actively and prominently contributed to create a climate of fear, suspicion and hatred between French muslims and the rest of the French population.
This is not about the right to publish drawings of Mahommet: contrary to what Charlie Hebdo claims, they are neither the first nor the only French newspaper to have published the infamous caricatures, yet these other newspapers have not been attacked.
If this newspaper has published about the jewish community the same kind of heinous material that they have published about muslims, under French law they would have been severely fined and possibly banned from publishing, long ago. Yet the French state seems to give the message that their hate-filled, hate-contributing rhetorics is perfectly acceptable as long as it targets muslims.
Again, none of this justifies or excuses this attack, but let's stop pretending this happened to innocent bystander clowns: this happened to political activists who use "humor" as a tool of propaganda to knowingly and willingly escalate hatred and violence.
